Purple Piccabean Palm Tree - Archontophoenix purpurea

I have a new friend in Tampa that is a palm tree expert. This is one of his more rare trees. I've never even heard of it before. It's called Purple Piccabean Palm Tree or Archontophoenix purpurea. Here's his website for more info on his unique trees.

It's a gorgeous King Palm, that has a unique purple colored crownshaft and silver color on the underside of the leaflets.

Here are some details I've found:

Leaf type: Pinnate (feathered shaped) leaf, dark green leaf with glaucous/whitish color on the underside of the leaflets.
Suckering/Solitary: Solitary (single trunk).
Maintenance: Easy
Speed of growth: Slow to medium.
Height: Up to 40' feet.
Soil requirements: Average moisturel, good drainage.

  1. I love that purple palm. I have quite a few palms I grew from seeds collected wherever I find them

  3. Hi, i bought a baby Purple Palm off ebay 3 years ago, i'm in Santa Barabara, Ca and i have it in a 1 gallon pot and it's growing just fine and it has sun only half a day. i have grown many King Palm and i noticed the purple palm grows faster and has better looking, less skinny or droppy leaves.. just looks nicer than a baby king palm.. it's only about 3' tall from tip of frond to base and not showing any purple yet.. but it does seem to be a great little palm, i can't wait until i see mature ones around town some day..Have a great Day!... 4. I just put a cluster of 3 of these 5-6' tall in the back yard here in Long Beach, CA. Bought at a local nursery that had quite a few.

Considered Alexander Palm since it doesn't grow as tall, but like the look of this one better.

I found your post by searching for purple palm tree to find out its proper name for my file, since it wasn't readable on the carbon copy receipt. Thanks!

  6. Just back from a visit to Panama. Saw a palm that grows multiple stems (trunks) from a single root ball. Had seen same or similar in Maui. Local nurseries are no help.
Not super tall (stems to 20" more or less), stems about 3-4" in diameter.
Any ideas (can send a picture?)
