The above photo was taken two days after I plucked off the top 2 inches of this young tree. I just pinched it off with my fingers.
Less than a week later, new growth is bursting out all over. The new growth is bright red and grows from the top few inches of the main stem just above a node. Now, each of these three red blobs will form into a tree branch. Each will grow straight up and should begin to form leaves within the next month. Pretty cool.
Node: (noun) the part of the stem of a plant from which a leaf, branch, or aerial root grows.

Great post Danielle!!
That's a timely post for me. It is what I need to do with alvacdo I have. Thanks!
I want an avocado tree for my back yard but I am not sure if my small place can handle it
Exactly what I needed to know!
Just one question: If I pinch the tree just after repotting it, will this put the tree under too much stress?
I have an avocado that is 24" tall and is one long branch with 5 or 6 sets of leaves -- I didn't know it was supposed to be pinched back. If I do it now, should I pinch it at the top, or down by the lower leaves?
Hello Danielle!
I´m from Portugal and have just found your blog trying to know a little more about the avocado. I´ve changed my first seed from the water glass to soil 2 weeks ago, and i´ve been readind that i should pinch it back to 6/8 inches when it reaches 12inches tall, never found images of it. It´s my first plant, apologise my ignorance! I can see that your avocados are older than mine. Right now, it has 4 leefs, i would like to ask you, where must i pinct it when it reaches the 12 inches.
Once again, congratulions for your site, wich i´m a new follower!
Thanks for your attention
Tiago
