How to Propagate Royal Poinciana Seeds

My garden wish list has included a Royal Poinciana tree for over a year. This morning I planted 5 seeds I collected from a local tree that was dropping seed pods.

UPDATE: this post contains misinformation! These are not seeds...they are unbloomed flowers that I planted. Duh! Please see my new post with REAL seeds to learn more.

I soaked the seeds overnight. I also dipped them in boiling water for 2 minutes. Ss shown in this photo, the seeds opened up after soaking. I chose 5 seeds that were very different...a green, a yellow, and 3 brown ones that were various sizes. We'll see which ones germinate first, last, biggest, smallest, etc.

I planted them in a mix of sand, perlite, and potting soil.

  1. Hi, I saw your blog through google reader search for 'plumeria' I just wanted to say that I'm not sure those are Royal Poinciana seeds. Those look like the flower buds. I think this link will show you what the seeds look like. I recently planted one in 8b, and have a 4 inch seedling right now!

Hope this helps and isn't meddling! http://www.seedshawaii.com/media/royal%20poinciana%20seeds.jpg

  2. I don't think that link worked actually, I would just google search Royal Poinciana seeds or Delonix Regia seeds.

If you can't find any seed pods on the tree in your neighborhood (the pods are over 12 inches long and flat), I bought some cheap Delonix Regia seeds on Ebay for like less than 4 or 5 dollars with shipping and handling.

  3. Those are not Delonix regia (royal poinciana) seeds. You have to hack the seeds out of the long hard dried seedpods.

  8. Hi. The Royal Poinciana seed pods do need to be medium to dark brown and they will open on their own to reveal the seeds after they fall on the ground and dry a bit. Now is a great time to find them, just look under any Royal Poinciana tree and you are likely to see them. I think 99% of people toss them out as yard debris, so you can probably get some freebies just for the asking, kinda like mangos here in Miami for the last month have been everywhere also. Have fun!
