Before I soaked them overnight, I boiled them for 4 minutes....that's right, boiled. The outer portion of the seed is very hard, and so boiling is recommended. There is a white skin-type film that is pealing off the seeds now. I guess this is how it works. The seeds I collected were found on the ground still inside a cracked open seed pod. The seed pod is hard, woody, and about 18 inches long. They can be found all over the ground during time of year.
P.S. - thanks to those bloggers that told me I had accidentally planted the blooms!

I did the same as you did, but I clipped some of the seeds and even sandpaper them, boiled them and then soaked them in water for 24 hrs.
ReplyDeleteNow one day after that, one of them waked up, showing a nice strong root. Please let me know what happens next...when to take them out of the flask and plant them in soil.
I'm trying to germinate royal poincianas myself. Driving around looking for pods I have found various types of pods. Are they all that different? They vary in size
ReplyDeleteany luck with stem tip cuttings of pincianna
ReplyDeleteis it ok to not see a root when u plant mine just puffed upp
ReplyDeleteI have successfully propegated seeds from the orange royal poincianna and am currently trying to do the same with the yellow (at least I think its the right tree) however the seed pods are very different from the orange one. My first attempt gave no results so I'm going to give it another try.
ReplyDeleteI've tried with about 20 yellow poinciana seeds...soaking some, boiling/soaking others, sanding-boiling-soaking others, clipping off the tip of some. So far, only ONE has sprouted, but in about 8 months, it's now about 4 feet high and THRIVING. I live in Miami FL.
ReplyDeleteI've got about 20 left and hope to get at least 1-2 more. I have red pioncianas in the backyard, and THOSE seeds seem to drop to the ground and sprout everywhere. These yellow ones are challenging. We also tried cuttings from a tree, and they did fine for a few weeks....and then died.
GOOD LUCK!
