---UPDATE! A fellow gardener has identified this weed! See comments---
Remember those mystery seeds? I believe this plant came from one of the small seeds that came from the large seed pod shown below....my original guess was that the seeds were from a jacaranda. Since these flowers are yellow, I guess that rules out jacaranda. It's not a golden rain tree.

quite the mystery
ReplyDeleteDanielle, I have the exact same plant growing in my yard and I am puzzled as to what it is also. My friend gave it to me a few days ago. She left a bag of miracle grow potting soil outside (I live in Fla. as well) and it started to grow IN THE BAG. She gave it to me, thinking that it was a royal poinciana. In fact, her landscaper told her it was a royal poinciana. I was immediately suspicious because of its looks. Then yesterday I saw the exact same small yellow flower on it that you saw. Up close the flower looks like a tiny orchid flower (an oblong bottom) with some red dots behind the yellow front. My only guess is that it might be one of the many varieties of "silk trees," some of which are considered weeds. These "silk trees" have pinnate leaves that look like royal poinciana leaves. I am completely curious. Please let me know if you find out exactly what it is by posting it on your blog!
ReplyDeleteDanielle, I asked the UF master gardener about your mystery plant. Here is the response:
ReplyDeleteThe weed you have is a hemp sesbania. The stems can grow 4 m tall. Found along ditches, river banks.
Hard to control. Roundup or Valor will provide 80 percent control. I would dispose of that weed before it seeds.
