Rubber Plant Root System

Back before I knew any better, I planted this rubber plant 12 inches from the house. Now that I know this is one plant that can crack concrete, I am toying with the idea of moving it.

Here's the thing...
I've kept the rubber plant pruned back to a 4 ft bush (not a tree). Does this mean I'm also keeping the root system at bay? Or will I be surprised to find a mile of roots under a 4 ft plant? I'm off to GW for advice. I'd love to hear from you.

  1. I've got a white and green variegated rubber plant sitting in a pot on my bathroom counter. At the moment he is about 2ft tall, roots are not that big, but he's been in a pot for his whole life.

I'd say that the roots could be pretty big down there. Being a Ficus, you'd want to make sure you put some poison on any remaining roots to ensure that any roots left die and don't shoot a new plant.
    Good Luck!

  2. You'll find a mile of roots, is my prediction.

  3. i believe that most plants work the same and if they are pruned and kept smaller it will encourage the plant to spend its energy on root growth..

but on the flip side if you were to let the rubber tree get too big then it will definitely need to ground itself by setting larger roots...

so i guess it should just be a happy medium...

dont prune it to small and dont let it get really huge...

that would just be my guess...

    btw i love your blog.....
