Green Onion in South Florida
I think it's the wrong time of the year, but I planted these baby onions anyway. I think they will do well since I am not trying to wait months for them to become full-fledged onion. I just want to use them as green onions. I got them at Walmart and I don't know the variety or how long they should take. Poor packaging.

Oh well, at least you get the element of surprise! Hope they work out for you:)
ReplyDeleteHi Danielle,
ReplyDeleteJust a quick savings tip in case you ever want to try it: if all you want is onion greens then all you'd have to do is save the 'butts' of the onions you buy at the store...you know, the side with the roots...use all the parts you normally use but plant the roots in the ground. Sounds weird but it works!
A few months down the road the onions you planted will seed and you can also plant those, although if your onions were not heirloom you will get something different...but it is worth experimenting :)
Enjoy the greens!
I've never been able to grow large bulb onions here, so I use the tops for cooking, too. They're easy and fun. Good luck.
