Palm Tree Weeds

This time of year, the queen palms, drop their seeds. Many of the seeds germinate and begin to form little baby palm trees. Sometimes I let them grow, then replant them somewhere else. Today, I just threw them in the weed pile.

You can see how the tree grows...the seed doesn't even burry itself in the ground, it just lays on top of the ground, send a root down, and a stalk up.

  1. That's a long root for a tiny plant. No wonder it's so hard to pull the little buggers up.

  3. May I ask what do you mean by germinate and how do you know when it does?

  4. Always seems a shame to 'bin' a healthy looking seedling any chance you could give them away or send to a charity ... any native tree seedlings we have are given to local nature reserve as part of their re-planting scheme.

  5. Germination is the process in which a plant or fungus emerges from a seed or spore, respectively, and begins growth. The most common example of germination is the sprouting of a seedling from a seed of an angiosperm or gymnosperm.

When the seed send up a green stem with a leaf at the top, it has germinated.

  6. Oh I see, thanks for the explanation. I'm fairly new at the concepts and with the whole home gardening. Do you have any tips as to where I can self-learn?

  8. Germination is a fascinating process. Seeing a tiny seedling emerges from a dry wrinkled seed and watching its growth and transformation, is observing the mystery of life unfolding. The first sign of germination is the absorption of water -- lots of water. This activates an enzyme, respiration increases and plant cells are duplicated. Soon the embryo becomes too large, the seed coat bursts open and the growing plant emerges.

  9. Hi Danielle,
I cannot believe you throw away the Palm seedlings.
They cost a fortune with us in the garden centres. But that is the only place they grow well as all our efforts to grow them have failed.
Must be our awful northern french weather !
