Day 54: The Box

I neglected the garden for almost 2 weeks...boy was that a mistake! At least I didn't find a snake...I just found tons of other pests.

I had lots of black swallowtail caterpillars all over the parsley. I let them live, even though I'll probably have no parsley tomorrow. Oh well, they are beautiful butterflies.

I found some young and some mature black swallowtail caterpillars. I used this site to identify them. www.butterfliesandmoths.org.

Then, I found some horrible cabbageworms on the arugula and cucumber. Those got a good dose of neem oil. I also had to chop back the arugula to 4 inches. It was getting too tall anyway.

Then I found cornworms on the corn. They got a good dose of neem oil too.

I'll be back tomorrow to see if it needs to be treated again.

  1. Encourage natural predators such as predatory wasps by planting lots of flowers blooming at different times of the year.

Avoid insecticides, as they will knock out your caterpillars for a time, but they will also repel your natural predators.
